Cafe Eden

Tonight Garry and I wanted to get something to eat near uptown Dallas. We searched the map for places that aren't too expensive and aren't Mexican. Finally Garry found a cafe that had just about everything anyone might ever want to order on the menu. But when we approached the parking lot, the place looked like a tiny little dive of a place and I was suddenly not interested. So we decided to go to the place I had found instead called Eden Restaurant and Pastries. Its description said cottage, and that is exactly what it turned out to be: a tiny little house on the east side of Dallas Love Field Airport with parking for 5 cars. And a neon "open" sign.

Apprehensively, we opened the door and walked in. The tinkle of the door and the tables set inside the front door let us know that it was not someone's home we just entered. But the place was completely empty inside. No one greeted us or appeared to even hear the bell.

After a few minutes a woman in a chef coat came out from the kitchen and let us pick a table. Her waitress would not make it in tonight, but she'd be happy to wait on us as she cooked. The small room had three tables set and ready for guests. On the fireplace mantle and in curios on either side, as well as in the ceiling nooks, the proprietor had decorated with a crowded collection of antique dolls, awards, pictures that might have been from her wedding, flowers, etc.

We arrived at 6:50pm. We started the evening with an appetizer of chilled melon soup and sweet breads. The soup was totally unique. It was fresh and delicious! The breads were zucchini, banana, carrot, and blueberry. Tasted fresh and mmm good. A little like eating dessert before dinner.

After about 45 minutes our other appetizer of baked Brie en croute and fruit came out. It tasted exotic and was well worth the wait. In the mean time, Garry and I had quiet time to talk about the kids, and stare meaningfully into each others' eyes. We also played games in our phones, and shopped for a lake cabin.

After about 30 minutes, his side salad came out. She served him the house dressing without even asking him his preference because she told us that it must be good since people eat it by the spoonful. It was that good!

Then 20 minutes later, she brought out our entrees. Garry had deep fried crepes filled with southwestern chicken and avocado. He relished every bite of it. (Except for the crepe. He is gluten-intolerant, so he avoided as much of the crepe as possible.) I ordered beef stroganoff. It came out a little more burgundy-flavored than I am used to, but the overall flavor was mild enough for me.

Overall, we thought the place was so unique and the food so delicious that we'd like to take our foodie friends sometime. We finally finished up and settled the check at 9:00pm. It was a 2 hour private dinner. Fun.

How messy was your room?

Two daughters share a room. They have let the mess accumulate for a month and today it is time to clean the room.

Me: don't worry, we are going to do the "10-minute room clean" on your room
Daughter R: it won't work.
Me: sure it will. It worked on my room.
R: yeah? Well how messy was your room?
Me: messier than yours, I am sure.
R (skeptically, as she stomps out): able to see the floor?

Funny because she's right. Mine might have been messy, but in hers, you literally can't see the floor.

Pinky to Target

I guess it's been a long time since I did little piggies on Trex (4) because after doing the little piggies on his toes one night, the next night he said, "Mommy, I want you to do 'This little pinky went to Target.'"

Dinner at my house

At the dinner table tonight, Cani (7) picked a fight with Pixie (9) over the brussels sprouts. Contrary to what might be expected, she wanted to fight over the fact that there weren't any left after Pixie took more than her share. Unable to make myself intervene, I looked aside only to see Trex (4) wolfing down his spaghetti squash. Haha. That's the kind of trouble we have... Not enough vegetables.

Blech la blah

Rbiker (7) and Trex (age 4) diligently eating their soup so that they can have some blech-la-blah as Trex says (translation: baklava) for dessert.
